Researching Descendants of Whipple Immigrants to the United States

Most Whipples living in the United States today are descendants of four immigrants.

1. On September 16, 1632, teenage John Whipple arrived in Dorchester (part of present-day Boston) aboard the ship Lyon. He was about 15 years old, born about 1617 in England. In 1658—when about 41 years of age—John, his wife Sarah (maiden name and birthplace uncertain) moved with his nine children to Providence, Rhode Island, where two additional children were born. John died in Providence on May 16, 1685.

2,3. Six years later, in 1638, middle-aged brothers Matthew (born about 1590) and John Whipple, (born 1596) arrived with their families in Ipswich, Massachusetts, from their native Bocking, Essex County, England. Both were in their forties when they arrived. Matthew died in Ipswich on September 28, 1647; John died in Ipswich on June 30, 1669. Matthew and John were the children of Matthew Whipple of Bocking; they were great grandsons of Thomas Whipple of Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England.

4. In 1844, Charles Frederick Whipple arrived in Louisiana from Baden Baden (in present-day Germany). He settled in the city of Houma in Terrebonne Parish.
