The two earliest American immigrants named John Whipple are misidentified in a large number of online databases. In fact, many databases have merged them into a composite John Whipple, with a variety of spouses and a large number of children. We mention them here, in hopes of clearing up your confusion.

"Elder" John (1596-1669)

Died in Ipswich, Massachusetts

1. "Elder" John's entry in the Whipple Database
2. Born 1596 in Bocking, Essex, England.
3. Immigrated to Ipswich, Mass., with brother Matthew (see Matthew's entry in the Whipple Database) in 1638.
4. Married Susanna Clark.
5. Ipswich, Mass., Whipples all descend from John and his brother Matthew.

"Captain" John (abt. 1618-1685)

Died in Providence, Rhode Island

2. Baptized 13 Dec 1618 in Great Waltham, Essex, England.
3. Son of John, grandson of William, both of Great Waltham, England. (See his father John's entry in the Whipple Database).
4. As a teen-age indentured servant, immigrated aboard the Lyon to Dorchester, Mass., in 1632.
5. Married Sarah, then in 1658 moved with her and children to Providence, R.I., where additional children were born.
6. The earliest known Providence, R.I., Whipple.
7. Earliest Whipple settler in the New World.
