He was a member of St. Paul's lodge, F. and A. M., of this city and of the First Baptist church, and in both of there organizations was beloved and respected as a true worker in the faith.

SENNETT - When the Rev. Benjamin Whipple passed from this world on March 8, 1813, his loyal congregation footed the bill for his burial.

In July 1984, Elder Whipple's great-reat-great-grandchildren repaid the Sennett Federated Church for its kindness.

Pastor David Pieplow was a bit shocked when he received the check for $25 from Lorraine Whipple Butler and S. Robert Whipple of California. "Obviously, they felt it would be nice to clear up the old family debts," he said.

The Rev. Whipple served as pastor from 1812-13 for the Baptist Calvary Church, now the Sennett Federated Church. Pieplow said the the foundation of the original church still remains, not far from Elder Whipple's grave.

The long overdue payment was discovered by Whipple's descendents while investigating their geneology. An inquiry into church records revealed the fate met by Elder Whipple.

Pieplow said Whipple succumbed while administering comfort to victims of an epidemic. An entry in church records, dated March 20, 1813, described the reaction of his congregation: "Voted to make out 25 dollars for our late Elder Whipple's last services amongst us."

Not wanting to keep the church waiting any longer, Mrs. Butler quickly sent a check. "My brother Robert and I have voted to make out 25 dollars to repay your church treasury," she wrote.

On Sunday, the church will conduct a memorial service in honor of the late Rev. Whipple. Afterward, descendents of Whipple's congregation will lay flowers on his final resting place.
