!SOURCE: Email from Al Lee (email hidden) to the Whipple Website, 17 Apr 1999. Gives name Ethan Whipple, dates 1767-1836 (no places), the second husband of Lydia Babcock Does not identify parents.
!SOURCE: Email from Beverly (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 9 Aug 2005. Identifies the Ethan Whipple who earlier married Lydia Babcock as the same person who married Elizabeth Greene and Abigail Hawkins. Cites the following evidence:- History of Fair Haven VT by Andrew Adams, 1870, notes Ethan, son of Captn Benjamin Whipple, had a sister Mary Whipple who married John Brown in Providence RI 2.14.1790. John and Mary (Whipple) Brown lived south of Mr. Whipple. John Brown was the son of Captn Chris. Brown and came to Fair Haven from RI about 1792 when he was 26 so that puts Mary in the right age and family to have married this John Brown.
- DAR Records (not always accurate as the old records were often not verified but relied on evidence given by the applicants but they do support the evidence here as the descendant of Ethan and Lydia claims the same Ethan son of Benjamin.)
- DAR Record, #35526
Benjamin b 1726 m Anna Brown 1756 Benjamin in Senior Class of old officers, taken ill and son Ethan sent to take his place. Ethan born North Providence, died Fair Haven, VT. Ethan enlisted as 1776, Corporal, re-enlisted and took his father's place. Pension allowed 1832 service as corporal and sergeant, RI line. Ethen m first wife Elizabeth Greene 1764-1786 (from another source m Elizabeth 1782) had son Joseph 1783-1853. Joseph m in 1806 to Anna Hawkins 1780-1854, had Joseph who m Eliza A. Culver etc. (you have them and the sons Benjamin and Cyrus with the info from their DAR records so I won't repeat.) (My note, By the way, Hawkins father, Charles Hawkins, was a brother to Mary Hawkins who married Ephraim Whipple b 1729.) - DAR Record #46346, descendant of Ethan and Lydia
Ethan 1758-1836 Sergeant Capt Olney's Reg., re-enlisted under Capt Keene. Took his father' place. Ethan's wife Lydia Babcock(Church), his 3rd wife, had Caroline Whipple (Eddy).
- Rev War record images
The dates of Ethan's marriages were still confusing me so I got his Rev War records of which there were 13 pages. Here is the info that supports this Ethan m to Lydia (summarized by page):- Face sheet lists wife as Lydia
- States claimant of Fair Haven, VT
- States born 2.13.1758 as recorded in his father's bible
- Went to Fair Haven VT age 45 and now resides there
- Widow's application at Burlington, VT, name Lydia Whipple, same military history as previous Ethan
- Court record, declaration of Lydia (2 pages) that Ethan died 12.18.1836, that she was married to Ethan by Rev Mr Leonard or Lincoln in Poultney (Rutland County, VT) (my note the date is way off 4.27.1797 unless she was married to him twice), witnesses to marriage are listed; she further declared that her name to be Lydia Church when married to Ethan and that she raised "three children of which said Ethan was the father, to wit, Mary Maria, John Newton Whipple and Caroline are the children of Ethan and Lydia said declarant." signed 2.4.1850pg 8-9 nothing of note
- I'm sending you a copy of this page which lists the children of Ethan and Lydia and states she is the 3rd wife. It looks like this was taped onto another page and no indication of whose handwriting it is but it lists the three children above and their birth dates (my note, the two children other than Caroline were both deceased at the time of her declaration but were perhaps of another wife?)
- nothing of note, other than the dates of service were apparently in dispute at Ethan's first claim
- Nothing of note
- I'm sending you a copy of this to see what you make of it. It is the second page of a letter restating the facts, adds that Ethan was commissioned Lieutenant 1781 and that Lydia's maiden name was Babcock b 5.17.1774 and reaffirms the names of the three children. What you should look at is the handwritten note at the bottom, looks to me to read, "did not use the dates of birth of the children as there was some fraud". I wonder if Lydia was claiming two of the children who were not hers, for what purpose I don't know since they were deceased and I would not think it would have affected her claim for his pension anyway.
