!SOURCE: Email from Bruce Whipple to the Whipple Website, 15 Oct 1999. Cites records of Roxbury Township, Delaware County, New York. Bruce maintains that there are two Abrahams, who are cousins, one the son of the Luther, and the other the son of Joseph. He states that the two cousins are often confused, and that "it was Joseph's son Abraham who married Asenath Sumners in Connecticut, moved to Halifax, New Hampshire, where most, if not all, of their children were born. He then moved with his family to Roxbury, New York, and occupied the farm 'next to his Uncle Luther.'" --Bruce Whipple
!SOURCE: Email from Don Risen (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 14 Aug 2002. Don disputes Bruce Whipple's conclusions. He states:I have reviewed both of the pages that you pointed out to me and find this to be a rather interesting situation. I have done extensive research in Delaware County, New York and I've come to the conclusion that the two Abrahams are one and the same person. The reasons as follows:
- Both Abrahams shown are listed as born in 1768. The one listed as Luther's son does not show a wife or family but shows a birthdate of Feb 11, 1768. The other one listed as Joseph's son shows only 1768 but has him married to Asenath Sumner (b:Aug 2, 1768). (The alternate surname Summer should be removed as she was the daughter of Daniel Sumner who married Lydia Fairbanks). I can personally verify that I have seen the side-by-side gravesites of Abram and Asenath and read their headstones and photographed them. The Abram next to Asenath was born Feb 11, 1768 and hers Aug 2, 1768. Your web-sites would separate them into two different families.
- Irma Griffin who was born in the late 1800s was a historian who wrote The History of Roxbury Town. She was apparently intimately familiar with the Whipples who resided in Vega as they are found extensively throughout her book. I would like to quote from two portions of her revised book:
Page 35: "The First Whipple Farm. Charles F. Bouton of Roxbury who died August 6, 1962, described the location of the lease lot and mill of Luther Whipple, Sr.(born in New London, Conn., 1743, died in Roxbury between 1820 and 1830) as follows: "Beginning at the first farm below Stratton Falls at West Settlement, starting at the Tyler cemetery and going North there was the Tyler farm which took in the burying ground."
Going a bit further in the book:Page 36: "John Kierstad's Field Book at the Delaware County Court House, Delhi, N.Y., shows that Luther Whipple signed a lease August 1, 1795 on Lot 52. In an unrecorded transaction, according to the late John D. Monroe, this lot was later assigned to Abraham Gould.
The author goes on to describe the other children, Eunice, Polly, Elizabeth, Lydia, Henry, Martha, Clarissa, Thomas, and Luther Jr., and details about their marriages, homes, etc. Now I would like to take you to another portion of her book, beginning on page 147:"In unrecorded transfers still later, this lot is described as the Saw Mill property 'leased by Luther Whipple'.
"Luther Whipple married Eunice Gates, daughter of Thomas Gates and Elizabeth Mitchell, of Preston, Conn. Elizabeth was a descendant of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower. Luther and Eunice had the following children:
"Abraham Whipple, b. 1768, married Asenath Sumner. They settled in Batavia-kill. Their markers are in Vega cemetery (See chapter on Vega-Denver)."
"The Denver farm 'Crystal Springs' now owned by Mr. and Mrs. John B. Hewitt had descended from mother to daughter almost ever since pioneer days. Abraham Whipple, the eldest son of Luther Whipple, Sr., of New London, Conn. (who settled near the Four Corners at Roxbury) moved first to Halifax, Vt., from New London, Conn., and then between 1800 and 1810 moved to Batavia-Kill, at the site of 'Crystal Springs'. Abraham and his wife, Asenath Sumner, had eleven children: Abigail (married Isaac Coons); Eunice (married David Davis);......"
The author continued on with the list of children and their descendants. Then "Abraham died in 1852 and his son, Daniel, inherited the farm, but in 1865 moved to Kortright and sold the farm to his niece, Mary Davis, daughter of Eunice and her husband, Joseph Bouton." - In all of my research in Delaware County records I have never found an Abram or Abraham that was a son of a Joseph Whipple residing in the county. I have looked over the census records for 1830, 1840, etc. and continuing thru the 1880s. I do however agree, and my records show that he had an uncle Joseph (b: May 18, 1740) who married Abigail Gary but my records show only that they lived in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont.
