Headstones Gravestones of Major General Amiel Weeks Whipple and His Wife Eleanor Mary (Sherburne) Whipple
The Union General Amiel Weeks Whipple died while defending Washington, D.C., at the Battle of Chancellorsville during the American Civil War. Eleanor's gravestone appears to the left of her husband's.

!SOURCE: Email from Tom McDonald (email hidden) to the Whipple Website, 30 Apr 2006. Tom writes: "Eleanor Mary Whipple, wife of MajGen Amiel Weeks Whipple is buried beside her husband at Proprietors Burying Ground, Portsmouth, NH." In a second note written the same day, Tom adds: "I visit the gravesite a couple of times a year. Both graves have suffered from acid rain and Amiel's from vandalism & could use a bit of restoration."
