However, according to Charles William Farnham, in "John Smith, the Miller, of Providence Rhode Island: Some of His Descendants," (in _Genealogies of Rhode Island Families from Rhode Island Periodicals_ [Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1983], 2:90), Mary's maiden name was Sessions; Smith was the surname of her first husband, Elias Smith.
