!SOURCE: Email from Boyd Nielsen (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 1 Jun 2020. Cites the following synopsis:John A. Whipple and Laurentia Bumpus, a childless married couple of Forestville, a village next to Hanover, Chautauqua, New York, take in a young ( less than 8 years old ) girl named Hattie, about 1870 - 1875. Hattie is subsequently known as "Hattie Whipple". Laurentia died at home 19 February 1883, leaving then 16 year old Hattie living alone with her "adoptive father", John A. Whipple ( 1819 - 1909 ). Hattie turned 17 years old on 20 June 1883. Hattie left John’s home about 01 September 1883, pregnant, sheltering at the county poor house. Hattie’s guardian ad litem, George Higgs, entered a civil lawsuit 20 October 1883 against John Whipple in New York Supreme Court, Chautauqua County ( Case No. 19083 ) seeking compensation for the pregnancy 64 year old John forced upon then 17 year old Hattie in July - August 1883. John and Hattie apparently settled out of court, John marrying Hattie before the child, a son, John A. Whipple, Junior ( “Alfred” ) was born in March 1884. A second child, a girl, Alice, was born in October 1885. The family lived together for at least 17 years, parting before 1905, possibly subsequent to the 1904 death of Hattie and John’s first born. Father and son are buried near each other amongst other Whipple graves in Abbey Cemetery, Arkwright, Chautauqua, New York. The search for Hattie and Alice continues
