!MILITARY: "Samuel enlisted from Ledyard in Company C, First Regiment Connecticut Cavalry on 11/25/1861 and served as farrier and acted in that capacity until sometime in 1863. The autumn of 1863 he requested a position that would lead to promotion and was promoted to sergeant and transferred to Company G, First Connecticut Cavalry. Samuel was killed while carrying the Colors at the Battle of Ashland and his comrades could not secure his body so he was buried by the Confederates. He is listed on the Roll of The Fallen, on Soldier's Monument. (His name is included with a few other Whipple descendants in Ledyard Center.)" --R. Gilebarto
