Lucian Adolphus Whipple, Jr., 83, of Dublin, Georgia, died at his home on July 2 following a long illness. He was born in Cochran, Ga., on November 6, 1920, the son of the late Lucian Adolphus Whipple, Sr., and Lella Jackson Dillard Whipple.

Mr. Whipple was a veteran of World War II, and was awarded the Air Medal for his service as a combat air crewman with the 8th Air Force, holding the rank of Sergeant. He flew 10 combat missions over Germany as a gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber with the 715th Squadron of the 448 Air Group based in Norwich, England. His combat missions ended with V-E Day. He was active in attending Air Force group reunions through the years.

In 1947 he founded the Central Office Suppliers in Dublin, specializing in office machines and furnishings, serving the middle Georgia area as an Underwood typewriter agent. He won many awards for his sales volume, and made many friends throughout middle Georgia servicing his customers.

He has roots in Laurens County. He is the grandson of the late Stephen Bennett and Sarah Ann Holliman Whipple who farmed for many years on land near Whipple Crossing in the Dudley area before moving to Cochran to engage in real estate and commercial development.

Mr. Whipple was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dublin.

He was a graduate of Middle Georgia College in Cochran where he lettered as a member of the tennis team. He attended Texas Christian University and Northwestern University.

As a youth, he tinkered with electronics and radio communication, and built his own darkroom for processing film. From that beginning, he became an expert photographer and developed a lifelong interest in the hobby.

Mr. Whipple was a pilot, learning to fly in the 1930's as a teenager in Cochran. He began his military career during the early days of World War II as a Liaison Pilot attached to the field artillery in Louisiana where he flew small aircraft as a spotter for gunnery training. He loved to tell tales of his flying exploits during those days, and how he would sometimes put his craft down in a surprised farmer's pasture and wrangle an invitation to join the family for the mid-day meal.

He is survived by his wife Jane Tallmadge Whipple, two daughters, Jennifer Whiddon and Susanne Hagan and their husbands, Clinton A. Whiddon, Sr., and Rick Hagan, of Dublin and a son, Miles Dillard Whipple and his wife, Rhonda, of Milledgeville. Another son, Lucian A. Whipple, III, died in 1995.

He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Clinton A. Whiddon, Jr., Lella Carolyn Deraney, Scott M. Whiddon, David B. Whiddon, Mary Christina Ingram, Guy W. Ingram, III, Laura Elizabeth Ingram, Adrea Whipple Edwards, Amie Lynn Whipple, Kristen Brooke Whipple, Kaitlin Brae Whipple and Kelly Brice Whipple and four great grandchildren.

Two brothers, Fielding Dillard Whipple, Sr. of Milledgeville and Stephen Bennett Whipple II of Big Canoe, Georgia, and a sister Anne Whipple Alderman Murphey of Macon, and 25 nephews and nieces survive him also.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Townsend Funeral Home in Dublin..
