- !SOURCE: Email from Blanche Greene Wichman to the Whipple Website, 5 Sep 2005. This Richard Rathbone is probably not the person who married the sister of Matthew Whipple of Bocking, England. Blanche points out, for example, that:
- The "Rathbone Family Organization" has identified a Richard Rathbone (son of William) who was born in Nov 1570 in Prescott, Lancashire, England (baptized 26 Nov 1570 in Farnworth Chapel there) and married a Marion Whipple in 1595. This Richard died 7 Nov 1623 and is buried at the Farnworth Chapel where he was baptized. Lancashire is located in northern England, far from Bocking where Matthew and his purported sister Marion lived. (Bocking is located in southeast England, in Essex county of East Anglia, east of London.)
- "Dave Rathbun alerts us that the theory that Richard was the first in America was proven wrong decades ago. See the Rathbone Register for information about John of Ditton, Lancashire, who came in 1654. Additional resources have been provided by Robert Rathbun of the Rathbun Rathburn Rathbone Family Historian, who sent Descendants of William Rathbone in Rich Text Format."
