      !RESIDENCES: "In 1774 at the time of the Census in R.I. Stephen was living in Smithfield with a family consisting of one male over 16, one under 16, one female over 16 and one under 16. He appears again in the Census of 1777 and in 1790 as a resident of Smithfield." --R.S.D. Eddy, p. 140.

      !MILITARY: "Private, Capt. Stephen Whipple's Smithfield co., in Spencer's expedition against R.I. Oct. 1777; roll dated, Nov. 14, 1777, Smithfield; pay roll of Capt.
