!SOURCE: Email from Claire (email hidden) to the Whipple Website, 15 Jun 2004. Claire writes:John C. Whipple was born in September 1823 "in a rugged mountain town"...somewhere around the convergence of Massachussetts, Vermont, and New York, according to a commemorative piece in the Fairibault, Mn Republican of August 18, 1896. He was orphaned as a young boy. He was married to Fanny Bradsey (or Bradley) in Dunkirk, New York on February 8, 1853. The next year they moved to Fairibault, Mn, where their children were born. Calvin and Laura Adelaide died in childhood; sons William and George survived in to adulthood. William was my great-grandfather.
John C was a Justice of the Peace for Rice County, and apparently at one time was Deputy Grand Master of the local Masons. He fought in the Dakota Indian uprisings of 1862 (including the Ist Minnesota Regiment's successful defense of Fort Ridgeley) and was discharged in February, 1866. He died on February 5, 1869.
