State of New York, Oswego County
Ephraim Whipple of Elby in Genesee County in said state personally appeared before one of the Justices of the Peace of Mexico in said County of Owsego on the 8th day of Feb 1838 and says that some time in the summer season of 1778 or 1779 Caleb Whipple with whom deponent is personally acquainted, did reside in Plainfield in the State of Connecticut and that said Caleb did enlist in Service of the said State of Connecticut and was stationed at New London and while there he was wounded and during his confinement deponent visited him there and when sufficiently recovered went and brought him home and that when said Caleb was so recovered as to perform duty he returned [to] his regiment again to complete his nine Months service for which he was enlisted and that after the completion of the said nine Months said Caleb did enlist again for one year in the service of the said State of Connecticut and did serve one year. And further said deponent saith not. --Ephm Whipple

The Revolutionary War pension application of Caleb Whipple, who we know to be the son of Joseph and Katherine (Greene) Whipple, completed in June 1834 provides insight into the movement of his father's family.

On page 1 of his Revolutionary War pension application Caleb Whipple states that he was born in Coventry, Kent, Rhode Island on 23 July 1764 and that he last saw the record of his birth in the family bible owned by his father in Rutland, VT (he says about 16 years before which would be ca 1818. But later he says he left Rutland in 1814. He also says that he removed to Plainfield, Windham, CT when he was about 13 years old (which would be circa 1777).

On the last page of his application, he says that around the time of the close of "Shay’s rebellion" (occurred in 1786-1787) he "removed with father’s family to Cheshire in the state of Massachusetts where he remained for about 10 years. Then they moved to Rutland, VT. Caleb remained there until about 1814 when he moved to Utica, NY and in March 1829 moved to Mexico, Oswego Co., NY from where he was applying for the pension.

From a separate document (questionnaire of Thomas Rodman Whipple, grandson of Joseph and Katherine (Greene) Whipple, we know that Katherine died in Pittsford, Rutland Co., VT in 1812 and that Joseph died in Perrys Mill, Clinton Co. New York in 1818.

From the 1790 census, we see that Joseph Whipple (3 males over age 16, 1 male under age 16 and 5 females) were recorded in the Lanesborough, Berkshire Co., MA census (Note: Cheshire wasn't incorporated until 1793).

Joseph Whipple is found in the 1800 census in Rutland, VT.

Based on the above, following is a rough reconstruction showing where Joseph and Katherine (Greene) Whipple lived during their married lives:

      • 1760 - 1777 Coventry, Kent, RI
      • 1777-1787 Plainfield, Windham Co., CT
      • 1787-1797 Cheshire, Berkshire Co., MA (Joseph appears in 1790 census for Lanesborough, Berkshire Co., MA. Note: Cheshire wasn't incorporated until 1793)
      • 1797-1814 Rutland, VT (Katherine died in Pittsford, Rutland Co., VA in 1812)
      • 1815-1818 Perrys Mill, Clinton Co., NY (Joseph died in Perrys Mill, Clinton Co. NY in 1818)
