David Shaply was born 2 Jan 1805 in Lebanon, Madison, NY, and died 19 Mar 1890 in Hazelton, Luzerne, PA. His father was also named David, but his mother is currently unknown. David was married twice, first to Lydia Ann Whipple, c1835, and secondly to Ellen M. Whipple on 5 Apr 1854 in Providence, Providence, Rhode Island. David and Lydia had six known children, and you have them listed on Lydia’s page. In the 1880 census (West Hazelton, Luzerne, PA), David was residing with his daughter Julia, her husband (William Youngman), and their son (Barton Youngman). David is listed as being a retired merchant. It was after Lydia died on 25 Jan 1852, that David married Ellen, who is both a second cousin, and a fourth cousin once removed from Lydia. Their common ancestor is Benjamin Whipple (RIN 6125). Lydia is descended from Benjamin and his first wife Sarah Bernon, and Ellen is descended from Benjamin and his second wife, Esther Millard/Miller.

David left a will, which was recorded in Luzerne County, PA, leaving everything to his children with Lydia. Since he made no provisions for Ellen, I can only assume that she predeceased him. Lydia is buried at Kirkland Cemetery, Kirkland, Oneida, New York, with David. When Ellen died and where she is buried is currently unknown.

Lydia's youngest child was about 7 when his father married Ellen, so the children were probably aware of things around them. Ellen must have been a very strong woman to raise her cousin’s children, and not have any of her own.
