The Washington state death (where Henry d. in Seattle, King, WA) and marriage records state that Henry's parents are William Whipple and Phoebe Williams. On Oct. 15, 1914 in Seattle, King, WA Henry married his 2nd wife, Mary C. (Rattelle) Labrot (also divorced), dau. of Frank Rattelle and Matilda Landry."

Blackford 30, his wife Cordelia, 35, and son Henry 10 mos.(b. abt July 1879). In 1900 the census lists the head as Rufus W. Blackford b. June 1850 with a wife named Lucy and children aged 6 and 1. Could Henry really be James W. Blackford/Henry James Whipple and adopted (formally or informally) by William and Phoebe (Williams) Whipple after the death of his mother Cordelia? That could explain the change of names and why Rufus W. Blackford gave permission for him to marry before he was 21."
!SOURCE: Email from Connie Johnson (email hidden) to the Whipple Website, 23 Apr 2016. She writes the following:Henry James WHIPPLE is a bit of a mystery to us. It looks like he married Daisy using the name James W BLACKFORD in Erie, Pa in 1900. They had 4 children, including my husband's great grandfather Bert WHIPPLE. Daisy and Henry James WHIPPLE later divorced in Washington state (1910). By that time, he is using the name WHIPPLE. The 4 children use the last name WHIPPLE. Daisy's son Bert told the story "the last name was WHIPPLE, changed to BLACK and then went back to WHIPPLE." Connie then notes the following about Henry James Whipple:- 10 March, 1900 - Married Daisy in Erie, Pa as James W BLACKFORD. His father signed a document allowing minors to marry as Rufus W BLACKFORD.
- 4 June, 1900 - (Erie City) census shows James W BLACKFORD and Daisy BLACKFORD living with the KNOWLTON family. It says James was born July 1979 in Michigan. Father and mother both born in Michigan.
- 18 April 1910 - (Seattle) census says he was born abt 1879 in New York. Father and mother both born in New York.
- 6 January 1920 - (Portland) census says he was born abt 1881 in Pennsylvania. Father and mother both born in Pennsylvania.
- 11 April 1940 - (Seattle) census says he was born aby 1880 in Pennsylvania.
- 26 April 1942 - WWII Draft Registration Card says he was born 14 July, 1879 in Cherry Valley Pennsylvania.
